The chicken and the egg

Egg bag

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while. I got scared.

So … back to the magic. Here’s a quick idea. Everyone and their dog does the classic egg sack trick. Egg goes into sack. Egg disappears. Repeat.

Oh, sorry, Andi just whispered in my ear that it’s called the Egg Bag trick. With the exceptions of Jeff Hobson and Tom Mullica, I haven’t seen anyone make it very exciting (the trick, that is). I’m not saying that I have anything to help but perhaps the idea below might spark some creativity.

The Soap Sack by Rich Aviles
If the headline doesn’t give away the idea, I don’t know what will. Instead of using an egg, use a bar of soap. Why, you say? Because soap is funny. The jokes practically write themselves. Especially when you start thinking about disappearing soap.

The bag could easily be presented as a new product by Avon that keeps your soap clean while you wash.

This might be obvious but the only way to end such a routine would be the production from the bag of a rubber ducky, a back scrubber and, of course, water.

Have fun.

    Rich,

I really like the idea of applying the Egg Bag to things other than eggs. An idea I had was that instead of the Avon bag, you could present the bag as a travel wash bag as that’s something that already exists to hold soap.

There is something I quite like about an egg, in that it could be damaged at any minute. Especially when magicians bang the bag in a hard surface - it really seems like there’s no way for an egg to survive that kind of abuse (without becoming scrambled anyway).

And finally, I must mention Francis Minotti’s presentation. He is an absolute ninja. I’m not going to spoil the surprise so will just say that you really should check it out!

I haven’t seen Francis’ presentation. Is it something that will have to be seen live or is it available on video? A quick search turned up nothing.

I did just remember that Arthur Trace’s egg bag presentation is awesome as well. And it uses an egg. So maybe there are tons of great egg bag presentations out there. :)

    Hey Rich,
Hmm, it lends itself nicely to a trip across the border (cavity search, anyone?).

I second Menotti’s use of the bag. Stellar.

What about pulling another bag out of the bag, and then maybe the egg/soap out of the second bag?

The problem I always had with the bag while watching it being performed (which may speak more about the performers than the trick itself) was that there wasn’t so much of a, “Wow, that damn egg just disappeared!” it was more of a, “Wow, that bag can hide the damn egg extremely well!” Are there any ideas from you Cloggers out there on how to combat those thoughts? Part of the problem seems to be that it’s never fun to spend so much time proving something really vanished AFTER the fact, but in the case of the Egg Bag it’s pretty much necessary. It just seems dodgy.

What about using it just as an appearance tool rather than anything to do with vanishing? If you do all the proving methods to show it’s empty and then leave it in the hands of a spectator, you can vanish an object using other means and have it apparently transport to the Egg Bag. Wham bam, thank you hussy; there’s no need to prove anything after the appearance. Sure, it’s only used once instead of the multiple phases in the usual routines, but I don’t think that means there’s necessarily any less magic. But what the heck do I know?

I’d love to hear all your guys’ thoughts on the issue. What honestly went through your mind the first time you saw the routine? (Super-bonus points if you were a layman at the time.)

What, so I’m the only one who DOES keep their eggs in a large, black velvet bag with a metal handle?

  5. Keith Says:

    Tyler,

I assume you’ll be at camp, so ask Chad to see his. He had just an overall great handling. Nothing out of the ordinary but a good handling taught to him by Thompson. Just a thought that came to me.

I just stumbled on this clog. I have always been fascinated with magic. I’m just wondering, how do you actually do this trick? Is that something you guys share? Thanks

Got something to add?
